What is Kashmiri Akhrot?
Kashmiri Akhrot is walnut grown in the orchards of the Kashmir valley, mainly in the hill areas of Pahalgam, Anantnag and Kulgam. The trees grow at a good height above sea level, in a cold winter and mild summer climate. What we sell on this page is Akhrot Giri — the kernel, meaning the walnut with the hard outer shell already removed. It is ready to eat directly, or to use in your cooking and baking.
How Kashmiri walnut kernels look and taste
A good Kashmiri walnut kernel is light golden to light brown in colour, not bright white. The shape is natural, with visible ridges, not perfectly smooth. The taste is a mix of sweet and a light natural bitterness, which is normal for walnut and actually a sign of freshness. If a kernel tastes very oily, sharp, or has a chemical smell, it is likely old or not stored well.

Why Kashmiri walnut is well known
Kashmir has grown walnuts for a very long time, and the valley's cold climate and hill soil suit the walnut tree well. Because of this long history, Kashmiri Akhrot has a good reputation across India for its taste and quality. We hand-sort our kernels before packing, to remove broken pieces, shell bits, and kernels that are not fresh, so that what reaches you is good quality.
How to use Kashmiri Akhrot at home
You can eat the kernels directly as a snack, add them to your morning oats or dalia, mix into ladoo and halwa, or use them in baking like cakes and cookies. In Kashmiri kitchens, Doon Chetin is traditionally made by grinding walnuts with fresh green chillies (hari mirchi) and other simple ingredients into a flavorful chutney. For added nutritional value and a deeper flavor, you can also mix in Kashmiri Mountain Garlic (Ek Pothi Lehsun). Store the kernels in an airtight container, in a cool and dry place, away from sunlight. This keeps them fresh for longer.
