Harvest description & origin details

Grown wild in the high hills of Kashmir

This garlic grows wild in the cold, high-altitude hills of Kashmir. Nobody plants it or farms it. Local people go up into the hills and collect it by hand, the same way it has been done for generations.

Because of the cold and the altitude, this garlic plant puts all its energy into just one clove, instead of splitting into many small cloves like regular garlic does. That's why each bulb has a single, solid clove inside — small, but strong.

We get every bulb whole and unpeeled, straight from the people who collect it in the hills of Kulgam, Pulwama, and Budgam. We don't peel it or process it in any way. The natural outer shell stays on to protect the clove until you open it yourself at home.

Garlic has been a part of Kashmiri kitchens and home remedies for generations.
Naturally, it contains:

Allicin — a natural sulphur compound formed when garlic is cut or crushed, known for its strong aroma and traditionally valued for supporting the immune system
Antioxidants — plant compounds that help the body deal with everyday oxidative stress.
Manganese, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C — small but naturally occurring amounts in raw garlic.
Traditionally used in Kashmiri households to support digestion and general wellness.

Because the whole plant's strength goes into one clove instead of many, this variety is often considered more potent, so even a small amount is enough.

How to use

Remove the outer dry skin to release the cloves, then peel and crush 1–4 cloves. Wait 5 minutes, then swallow with warm water — or chew directly.

Storage Instructions

Store whole unpeeled bulbs in a well-ventilated jute bag or open basket in a cool, dry place with good air circulation. Keep away from moisture and sealed plastic bags. If you received the vacuum pouch, once opened, move bulbs to a breathable container rather than resealing the pouch — unlike spices, whole garlic keeps best with some airflow. Stored this way, bulbs stay fresh for 6 to 8 months.

Questions and Answers

5 answered questions

Does origin actually affect quality?

Yes. The same garlic variety grown outside Kashmir doesn't develop the same aroma, oil concentration, or pungency. Climate and soil directly shape its characteristic strength.

What color and smell does the clove have once you peel it?

Once you crack the outer shell and peel away the papery inner skin, the clove is ivory-white to pale cream in colour, like any garlic clove. The smell is where this variety stands out: because the whole bulb's growth goes into one clove instead of splitting into many, the aroma is noticeably more concentrated and pungent than plains garlic, especially once you cut or crush it — crushing releases allicin, the compound responsible for garlic's sharp smell.

Where do you source this garlic from?

We source it from mountain villages across Kulgam, Anantnag, and nearby regions in Kashmir. Most of what we sell comes from Qazigund, a town in Anantnag district of J&K known for collecting single-clove garlic at high altitude mountains.

I take one crushed clove swallowed with lukewarm water before breakfast. Very strong pungency, so do not chew it directly if you have low spice tolerance.

Bulbs are on the smaller side, but punch is double of hybrid garlic. Peeling takes patience though.
